Business

Head of Department: Mrs Jenny Collett

Overview

The Business department aims to build on the interest students have in understanding the world of business by exploring theories and concepts in the context of current events in the business world. Studying business develops key attributes sought by employers such as critical thinking, problem solving, analytical skills and the ability to carry out research and interpret data. Students will develop skills of data analysis, problem solving and essay writing.

Business Studies Collage

The challenges in meeting the needs of students with a visual impairment include:

  • The visual nature of some areas of the course, particularly access to diagrams and financial statements
  • Accessing large amounts of text in support of background reading and research of business topics
  • Keeping up to date with news and current affairs on a daily basis
  • Lack of the incidental learning acquired through sight

Examples of Adaptations for Visually Impaired Students

A number of adjustments are made to teaching to meet the needs of students with a visual impairment:

  • Modification of graphs and diagrams to provide students with means of independent learning and accessing materials
  • Structured work on developing research skills through the use of resource banks of large print, Braille and electronic materials
  • Opportunities to attend Business taster days at University
  • Links with local business in the community through work experience opportunities, helping bring business theory to life
  • Provide opportunities for more group based learning and sharing of research and ideas
